A modern bar stool with a woven natural rattan seat and backrest, supported by slim red metal legs, shown against a plain light gray background.
Hot Mesh takes its inspiration from the classic café chair designed by Thonet in 1859. We wanted to design a durable and stackable chair that could be used inside and out.
Black text on a white background reading: 'The Thonet chair's use of two bent pieces of wood to form the seat back is a study in economy.'
Three chairs shown in a studio setting: a black wire-frame chair on the left, a white molded chair in the center, and a natural wood folding high chair on the right.
We used a similar strategy and tried to make a sturdy frame from the least amount of material, while also creating a nice silhouette.
Close-up of a light natural wood chair showing the backrest, seat, and frame against a plain white background.
A monochrome architectural sketch showing four chair designs arranged on a white sheet, with a faceted geometric white structure running along the top and right edges.
The last step was choosing the right material to finish the seat and back. Off-the-shelf materials like perforated metal and screen-like materials got the job done but were dull.
A bright blue metal mesh chair with a tubular frame, positioned in an industrial workshop setting on top of a stack of metal pipes and papers.
We fixed that by creating our own pattern and custom perforated steel – turning a hot mess into Hot Mesh.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum combined seating weight capacity for the settee?

The settee is designed for everyday residential and light commercial outdoor use and comfortably supports two adults. While a specific weight limit isn’t published, it is engineered for balanced, evenly distributed seating under normal conditions.

Is the settee comfortable without additional cushions, or are seat pads recommended?

The mesh seat is fully usable on its own and provides a supportive, airy sitting experience.
How does the mesh seat perform over long periods—does it flex, sag, or stay rigid?

The metal mesh has a slight, intentional flex that improves comfort and weight distribution. It is designed to retain its shape over time and does not sag under normal use when properly maintained.

Is the finish designed to withstand year-round outdoor use in rainy or snowy climates?

The settee is built with outdoor-rated materials intended to handle seasonal exposure, including rain and snow. However, in harsh or freeze–thaw climates, using a protective cover or storing it during winter months will help preserve the finish and extend its lifespan.

Does the settee remain stable when seating two people of different weights?

Yes, the frame is designed for balanced structural support and remains stable under uneven weight distribution. As with any two-seat furniture, placing weight evenly will provide the most comfortable and stable experience.

Can the settee be paired safely with outdoor cushions without them slipping?

Yes, cushions can be used safely. For best performance, choose cushions with non-slip backing, straps, or ties to help secure them to the mesh surface, especially in windy outdoor environments.

Does the metal heat up significantly in direct sun, and are shade or covers advised?

In direct sunlight, the metal mesh can warm up, particularly in darker finishes. The open mesh design helps reduce heat buildup compared to solid surfaces, but shade is recommended in hot climates for maximum comfort. Covers can also help protect the finish when not in use.

Are there replacement parts available for legs, glides, or damaged mesh panels?

Yes, replacement components such as foot caps, glides, and select hardware parts are typically available through the retailer or manufacturer. For structural elements like mesh panels, availability may vary depending on production and part type.
