Design Story:

The Hot Mesh Collection

Designed 2012

Hot Mesh takes its inspiration from the classic café chair designed by Thonet way back in 1859. You may not know it as the Thonet chair (or maybe you do!), but you know the one. We wanted to design a durable and stackable chair that could be used inside and out. The Thonet chairs’ use of two bent pieces of wood to form the seat back is a study in economy. We used a similar strategy and tried to make a sturdy frame from the least amount of material, while also creating a nice silhouette. The last step was choosing the right material to finish the seat and back. Off-the-shelf materials like perforated metal and screen-like materials got the job done but were dull. We fixed that by creating our own pattern and custom perforated steel – turning a hot mess into Hot Mesh.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum recommended weight capacity for the chair?

The chair is designed for everyday residential and light commercial use and comfortably supports typical adult seating. It is engineered to remain stable and durable under normal use conditions. Tested to 275lbs.

Does the metal mesh seat flex slightly for comfort, or is it completely rigid?

The mesh seat has a subtle degree of flex, which adds comfort and helps distribute weight more evenly. It is not fully rigid, but it also does not sink like a cushioned seat—offering a supportive, airy feel.

How well does the finish resist rust, fading, or chipping when left outdoors year-round?

The chair is treated with a protective outdoor-grade finish designed to resist rust and fading under typical outdoor conditions. However, prolonged year-round exposure—especially in harsh climates—may still lead to gradual wear. Covering or seasonal storage will help extend its lifespan.

Do the legs remain stable on uneven surfaces like gravel, decking gaps, or stone pavers?

The chair is designed with a stable base, but like most four-leg outdoor chairs, performance depends on surface conditions. It remains steady on most decks and pavers, while gravel or uneven gaps may cause slight wobble. A flat surface or outdoor rug improves stability.

Can seat pads or cushions be safely used without sliding due to the mesh surface?

Yes, seat pads and cushions can be used. On mesh seating, adding a non-slip backing or ties is recommended to prevent shifting, especially in windy outdoor conditions or during frequent movement.

Is the chair stackable without risking scratches or finish wear?

Yes, the chair is stackable for convenient storage. When stacked carefully, it is designed to minimize surface wear. However, like most metal furniture, repeated stacking may eventually cause minor scuffs at contact points, so gentle handling is recommended.

How warm does the metal seat get in direct sunlight, and is shade recommended in hot climates?

The metal mesh can become warm in direct sunlight, particularly in darker finishes or hot climates. It typically remains usable but may feel warm to the touch. Placing the chair in shaded areas is recommended for maximum comfort during peak sun exposure.

Are replacement glides or foot caps available if the originals wear down?

Yes, replacement glides or protective foot caps are generally available through the retailer or manufacturer. These help maintain floor protection and extend the usable life of the chair.
